Build suggestion: PSP consolized!

medtalhead
medtalhead over 8 years ago

Ben, knowing you take large form factor electronics and make them portable, why not do something different and make something small bigger.

Would love to see a consolized PSP with controller that connected to a tv. I have a psp but was never overly happy with the analog stick and button layout.

I love watching your show on YouTube, and the modified game consoles are by far my favorites ( I enjoy all your content though.)

To the people reading this post, reply to this thread with a "heck yeah" to get this made.

Thanks.

It sounds a cool project, but would the issue not be resolved with a PSP to TV cable:

    Isn't a non-portable PlayStation Portable, just a PlayStation?

The PlayStation doesn't play UMD format games.

There were many  PS1 games  that were ported for the  PSP. I don't  think  it is   possible  to   play  the  PSP ROMS  on a PS1 emulator. I   held on to my PSP  for   many  years   because  it  was the  only  console  that  Sony released  Star Wars  Battlefront 2. The PS3 will  play  the  PS1 games  that  are  sold  on PS network, but   none of  the  PSP games  available  from  PS Network  will  play  on PS3. The  PS Vita  will  play  all the  PS1 and PSP  games available  for  purchase  from  PS Network. The  PSP won't  play  any of  of the  PS1 ROMS that  are not  sold by PS network  unless  the  PSP is modded. I have  been  a  fan  of  PS for  many  years. I have  purchased  a lot  of   games  from  network  for  the  PS3. When  I  found  out  the  PS4 is not  backwards  compatible  with any of the  PS3 games  sold on PS Network, I sold  my  PS3 and purchased  a Xbox  One. It would  be  possible  to  make  a PSP  into  a console  for  TV but  without  a modded OS, it will  not  play  PS1 game ROMS. It would  be  easier  to   make  a  PS1 or PS2 into  a handheld  console  than to make  the  PSP into  a full  size console. Without  a  modded  OS, the  PSP is limited  to  playing  the  UMD  disks  and the  digital  PS1 games  sold by PS Network. And the  selection  of  PS1 games  available  on Network  is limited  to  Greatest  Hits titles.

That thing ...   . Best  way to  see how  bad  the  PSP graphics  are. The cable  was good  for  watching  the  Movie  UMD though. The  UMD  was on of the  best  features  of  the  PSP.  DVD  quality  video  in a much smaller format and  protective  case. There were  many  movies  released  in  the  UMD format. Unfortunately  the  UMD  went the same  path  as other formats such  as  Betamax, Laserdisc, MiniDisc, and other similar  technology.

While  anything  is possible, the  effort  to  create  a full  console  version  of  PSP  might  leave  you  wanting  for  more. It would  be  easier  to  install  a  PSP  emulator  onto  a  device  such  as  the  Raspberry  Pi  3. The  PSP  limited  in its  selection  of  game titles. It is  a great  idea  for  a  console  mod though.

I just would like to see Ben make one because I think it would be cool. I wouldn't have one myself because it's not for me. so this is not a selfish goal at all , other than I like watching Ben Heck build stuff. He made a three in one console and anyone can argue the reason that shouldn't been made, but was awesome nonetheless. Please don't look more into this request than me just wanting to see one made.

It is a great idea. Please do not let anything I have said discourage your idea. If anyone could do it, Ben Heck can. His work to restore that PS1 SNES Prototype Console is amazing. And he is like a doctor when it comes to case mods on game consoles.

It would be interesting to see a project like this for a few reasons. The UMD was a great portable media format. The movies are DVD quality, and there were many movies released in the UMD format. Each UMD has a protective shell. A few games or movies can easily fit in a pocket. And there are many games that were released for the PSP. Because the UMD has a protective shell, many of the games still available used on sites like Ebay will be in good condition.  It would be cool to design it into a PS1 or PS2 and use the controllers. But there are the challanges of getting video and audio to the television with the PSP 1001.

A giant PSP like the Giant Game Boy would be awesome.

Episode 225: Ben Heck’s Giant Game Boy Episode

If I was Ben Heck, my house would be a video game.
