TBHS project / build idea

Hello Karen, Ben and Felix.

 

I have a build idea that could be featured in the main TBHS, but also in sudo Sergeant and The Learning Circuit shows.

 

You could build a home sensor hub - a lot of people want to measure everything possible at home and put some solid ground to a later home automation.

 

The range of this build can be from a single episode device to a longer project. It would be great to start for example with a temperature and humidity sensor, connected via I2C or UART to a single board computer (SBC) like Raspberry PI or Beagle Bone Black that would store the values.

 

There are countless ways to expand this:

  • The first version can just connect something like SHT30 to an SBC via I2C and store the values in a file/spreadsheet with a time stamp.
  • Next version could connect more (local and distant) sensors, showing how to transfer information over 1 meter+ long wires or wirelessly.
  • Felix could take care of the Linux part, showing us how to store the records in a database and display the values to the user on a smart phone or a tablet (set up a local web server, database server).
  • Karen could show how to build some simpler analog sensors like a photo sensor, microphone... and teach us how to design and/or build a case for the device and sensors.
  • Later, Bob could incorporate some cloud service and Alexa for processing and controlling the home remotely. Or add a possibility to display / control from a mobile app or a web page.

 

I think it might be useful to divide this into several independent parts that could be built separately in all your shows, every time from a different perspective, adding one feature at a time.

    Fischertechnik have just recently launched a couple of educational kits that do something similar to what you describe.

    I want to make a moisture sensor system for my potted succulents so I know when they need to be watered. Does that count?

    That is a great idea for one of the sensors that could be relatively easy to build in The Learning Circuits show as I mentioned above.

     

    In addition to that, there could be a small water pump to water the plants, or some signaling system for start.

     

    I think there could be quite a lot of various sensors with various build and/or processing difficulty. For complex ideas, it might be interesting to see graphs of the relation of humidity of the soil compared to temperature and humidity of the environment - to measure the water consumption.

    (I used to have a load of cacti but they got a bit dangerous after about ten years when they started reaching the ceiling. One exploded under its own weight and another would actively attempt to seek out moisture from neighbouring plant pots and tip itself over in the process. Some bizarre flowers off of some of them however.)

    I saw a similar project for the Intel Galileo where they made a little emoticon out of LEDs which smiled or frowned depending upon the state of the moisture sensor reading. Perhaps one for a little OLED /ePaper display creativity.

    The left hand side of the LCD display screen in the background looks like the new Smart Home on-line dashboard, and the right hand side showing the scopes and video is one of the existing RoboPro (IDE) monitoring pages.

     

    The black box with the traffic lights and cables attached is the current Robotics TXT controller which has a touch screen interface to interact with.

    makerkaren - spotted this build on hackster.io which may be of interest as a starting point. self-contained self watering plant pot complete with succulent - 'just add water'.

    There are quite a few other self-watering systems there on hackster.io which may be worth a look at whilst designing you own ACME 'drought-be-gone' plant pot.

     

    Given that the pump only needs to run infrequently you could perhaps use solar to trickle charge a battery and use the picopower modes of an Atmel processor to reduce power consumption.

     

    Sounds like you could build a good STEM project out of this as there are quite a few ways you could adapt it and make it educational on a number of levels.
