Ultimate Gaming Console Hacks

Whenever a new game system comes out, we like to get our hands on one and have benheck take it apart and tell us what juicy goodness is inside. When time permits or inspiration strikes, we like to take those systems and hack them into something new and glorious.  Here are some of the console hacks Ben has done over the years:

Sega CDX Portable

Atari Xbox 360

Xbox 360 Disc Changer

Portable Atari 2600

Coin-operated Xbox 360

Xbox 360 Laptop

Slot Loading Nintendo Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

WiiU-Xbox 360-Ps3 Combo System Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

Xbox One Portable Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

Sega Dreamcast Portable Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

Xbox One S Laptop

Portable N64 Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

One of the things Ben is most known for is modding controllers for individuals with disabilities or a physical limitation. Here are some of the controller mods he's done in the past:

Xbox 360 Accessibility Controller

Rock Band Controller Mods

Xbox Single-handed Controller

Xbox 360 Macro Accessibility Controller

Power Glove Xbox Remote

Single-handed Xbox One Controller

PS4 Accessibility Controller

Xbox One Controller Mods

Nintendo Switch Joycon Mod

Ben's had a lot of ideas and requests for console and controller hacks. He turns portable systems into consoles and consoles into portables. He's modded controllers to be played in various alternative ways. He's combined multiple systems into one. But there are always more ideas out there. What ultimate console mod can you come up with that Ben hasn't done yet. No system combos. No portable to console or console to portable. Show me your creativity. Share your ideas in the comments below!

Interesting idea to put a Raspberry Pi into a CRT. I'm not sure how it would have to work, and you might have to add additional hardware to make it work, but it could be interesting. I wonder what controls…

If you choose to put a raspberry pi in a CRT make sure it's a Sony BVM-20F1U or something equally as beautiful. You should also look at making the RPi output 240p for true retro gaming glory.

I wonder what old broadcast CRT monitors are going for these days. It's been about 10 years since I was in the biz and my boss was buying them used back then so I would have no idea what they'd be worth…

I hope this thread isn't too old to drop a comment on.

I've always liked the idea of up-sizing. Link taking a GameBoy, or PSP and retrofitting it into an arcade cabinet.

Get a nice big screen for these old eyes...

I remember when companys like Namco released a pad along side a new game. The best by far was the neg-con pad designed for use on rage racer. The pad twisted in the middle and the twisting motion controlled the car during the race. It was a completely different way to play racing games, and once you got used to it, it worked really well. I wonder if Mr Heck could reproduce something similar using a PS4 / XBOX ONE / SWITCH pad? Racing games just arent the same without it......

Also the Ps Vita is Unix based, so it may be possible to run Vita OS on and Android tablet, with controls added on to a new case. But also the card reader would have to be added in.

Or an android portable gaming console. If it's possible to make and Android gaming console,  I can source some parts, I'm scrapping my phone when my new one cones in the mail, just need to attach a 2ND main board.

They're 2 different projects, but would get closer to my goal.

Yes, but with more than just a fast Ssd. So, you got my pint exactly, but I want to max out its pregormance.

I want to create a mod, to put high Ghz ddr3 64 GB Ram.

As well as the 2 storage drives.

Would the goal of the PS4 Steambox be to make it faster and with more storage capacity or something else?

What about a ps4 "steam box" for running both an ssd and hdd, but also depending on the RAM,

Whether it's soldered on or pin connected, upgrading to higher GB maybe a G.skill or crossair.

The only other thing I can think of, is making a larger Psvita from scratch(probably by patching a Linux tablet, with a split controller soldered in and installing the OS from the pc it's connected to), but made to run of the actual physical game card. Custom printed case etc.

Probably have to pull a similar trick to reinstalling OS on the ps4 for the home made vita.

Or send me the instructions, I'll import Asia English games, because the vita didn't get the love ot deserved state side.

Craigslist has always been my best friend for these. I like to look in the free section and almost daily I find people giving them away so that's a good starting spot if you plan on tackling this project. Definitely use composite output as David said for the retro goodness. I'd love to see how you would tackle audio with this.
