As you've probably seen, we're giving away Ben Heck's mind-blowingly fantastic portable ZX Spectrum build. It's worth more than the Mona Lisa painted on the back of the Declaration of Independence.

And oh my, but you guys are waxing nostalgically lyrical about my favourite computer of all time, so let's dig a little deeper into your childhood silicon addictions.

Let's find out once and for all which is the best ZX Spectrum game... ever!

Ps. I already know the right answer, so vote correctly! But if you want to vote incorrectly and can't see your game in the list, tell us all about it in the comments image

Chaos (link to javascript emu if you want to play it) , by Julian Gollop (Laser Squad, RebelStar, UFO Enemy Unknown/X-Com, Chaos Reborn) It was good single player, but if you could get a few friends round…

So many games. Back then fancy graphics could not hide dire gameplay, you had to do a lot with a little. Operation Wolf, Defender, Arkanoid all spring out for me as the true stars. I do remember a rather…

I'm relatively suprised that Elite isn't running away with this! Never played it myself but folks still talk reverently about it now! I do remember a Manic Miner clone that had Arthur Scargill's hairspray…

it’s simple to do that, you can create a loader that applies ulaplus palette in zx-spectrum basic

    something like:

    10 restore 30

    11 out 48955,64:out 65339,1

    12 for i=0 to 63

    14 read u

    16 out 48955,i:out 65339,u

    18 next i

    30 data 0,11,52,82,104,103,148,183

    31 data 0,11,52,82,104,103,148,183

    32 data 0,67,88,118,204,163,185,255

    33 data 0,67,88,118,204,163,185,255

    34 data 0,11,52,82,104,103,148,183

    35 data 0,11,52,82,104,103,148,183

    36 data 0,67,88,118,204,163,185,255

    37 data 0,67,88,118,204,163,185,255

    50 load ""

and you can create a .tap of it using zmakebas, and concatenate before whatever .tap file you have available (just like using “cat ulaplusloader.tap yourgame.tap > yourgamewithulaplus.tap” on the terminal)

Gotta be elite. The spectrum port kinda sucked, but the game itself? One of the best of all time.

I imagine any of these games ported to the new ULA+ color palette. Any of these would look amazing with the new colors.

My favourites to play were JetPac, Chuckie Egg, Gauntlet and Hero. Renegade was what inspired the graphics and game play on my King Penguin game. At the end of the day the creative genius combined with great playability makes Head of Heels my overall winner.

Brilliant - if I close my eyes and think of the Speccy, Manic Miner comes to mind first every time.  I voted for the game that reminds me most of the Spectrum - not necessarily the 'best' game in the technical sense, but probably the one that frustrated me the most yet kept me playing.

Matthew Smith... brilliant.  Imagine if the 'net and online gaming existed back then.

Had to be Target: Renegade for me. Not that it was super-amazing, but the timing was spot on. All the Double Dragon home conversions were atrocious, and tanked badly. And then Ocean (of Manchester fame) stepped in and filled the need for a co-op fighting game on the home computers.

    Nuff skill!

I do remember a Manic Miner clone that had Arthur Scargill's hairspray that you had to avoid, fairly sure I didn't dream that!
