How to use a JFET as a Buffer in a Guitar Distortion Pedal -- DC to Daylight 16

In the previous episode, we worked with JFETS. In this application based episode, we're making a prototype distortion pedal using JFETs as input and output buffers. We go over the basics of making a distortion pedal, some points of interest in typical topologies, and point out subcircuits that affect the tone of your guitar along the way. Let's get shredding!

  • Next one epic Derek episode <3<3<3 Exactly now I research and build about 10 fuzz/distortions/overdrives and check every one. Amazing thing - I did clone of EHX OD GLOVE which totally face kick me. The sound of Glove is really unique, and the main difference between Derek distrotion scheme was use the N-MOSFET 2N7002 intead clipping diodes. Pleasse check, how huge different gave MOSFET clipper.

    Hi wegi. Very cool!!! I've never seen a mosfet used as the clipping element - but you bet I am going to try it! I went the the EH youtube channel and gave this circuit a listen, and it sounds really good (I think much better than my circuit). I'm pretty sure you can post videos here in the forum, so if you ever make a vid, please post it here. I'd love to hear what your circuit sounds like!

    BTW, I like your mixture of through-hole and SMT components. In some effects pedal projects, I found older through hole transistors difficult to find, so had to use SMT in places.

    If you use ALL SMT components, then you can mount the PCB directly to the inside of the enclosure, which is nice - no need for standoffs. I made custom potentiometer footprints in KiCAD, and used them to secure the board to the enclosure...

    It looks much better than my version of GLOVE. Whatever I can do - it will never gave real experiences, no other videos, sound recorder. Hearing this effect in real life is amazing..

    First I had look yt movie with big polish musican Jan Borysewicz which tould: "The best job from this effects GLOVE do!"

    Next I ha read opinion from auction portal: "Borysewicz had right - this is very coool overdrive".

    4rd - I did scheme, delete 18V power supply option for make easier, order PCB and build and RUN.

    As I said I did 10 fuzzes/OD/DS and THIS ONE IS THE BEST - sounds an very wide distortion regulation from normal guitar, between small overdrive, overdrive, weak distortion, distortion up to the fuzz at the end! This must hearing in the real life as I said.
