I recall an educational series a long time ago where a number of students/hobbyists were given a design challenge to come up with prototype designs and then there was a discussion about the approaches that each had taken, highlighting some of the strengths and weaknesses. Toward the end, a highly refined version of the design was then revealed (often with some help from industry), before being discussed in some detail. The series was short-lived but I found it an interesting format.
