Tired of touchscreens? Touch tone phones a bit too modern for your tastes? Join DJ today as he builds a DIY cell phone that incorporates the mechanism of a rotary phone from 1957. Using a minimum of components and a maximum of grit, follow along as he builds a device from an alternate timeline.

I would have printed a receiver like off an old telephone. It’s more ergonomic. It would have less room but it would feel good in your hand. Then I would have put spring loaded hang up buttons at the top and bottom so you could actually hang up hard on people again. I miss that slam on a telemarketer of the old phone. No I don’t want to change my long distance carrier!!! SLAM!!!

Having lived through the changing phone era, the old dial phone had that nice feel to it.

When I worked for the phone company, I learned the intricacies of how switches and relays made everything work.

The modern world of digital phones advanced with technology to provide us with the current capability with portable phones that were unthinkable when I was young.

The real issue is how the technology changed how I use the phone.

Growing up, we ran to the phone as it could be an important call.

Today, I rarely even look up when the phone rings as it is usually a telemarketer.

The one device that used to bring us important communication has now become a nuisance.
