Even with the best of hearing, it can be difficult to understand what someone wearing a face mask is saying. Many people who are hard of hearing rely on using lip reading to understand what everyone is saying. With everyone wearing face masks, that amazing skill has been taken away. This project aims to help us all wear masks, look cool and understand each other more. A light up grid will be hidden inside your mask, and using a microphone your every word will be transcribed and scrolled across your face mask Lorraine will show you how to code an LED speech-to-text mask using a raspberry pi. This project has lots of potential to become a real life object, used in everyday life. Check out the links below for a further video where Lorraine explores using a paid for transcription services on a PC with Bluetooth to make a working scrolling facemask. Good enough for a doctor’s surgery to use for their patients.

    Hi Dave

I found no problem breathing with the mask on and I wore it for a long time.

Proximity sensor is definitely doable but will people notice it enough? Fog horn might be better for that Relaxed️

    The mask is…

oh yeah, that's exactly what inspired me to do my mask! I saw him on BBC news in June. Excited he's got a kickstarter now.

Yes, safety is a big issue, but some of us have ADD and we lose track of the letters as they scroll across the screen.

"...I would probably go with a LCD display mounted on a pocket protector..."

Over this side of the pond, we have the 2m social distancing rule in place, so for it to be effective it needs to be able to be read from at least 2m.

Although I guess there is always the NomadiX iWalker LCD display

    Nice project,

I would probably go with a LCD display mounted on a pocket protector so you could read a whole line of text instead of trying to interpret the speech flow.

Still, you did a good job using off the shelf components.

The mask is in a pouch at the front, no electronics are touching my skin. The lipo battery in the later version obviously helps with circuit shorts by cutting the power off.
