Life is full of tough choices, so why not let a children’s toy make those decisions for you? The Magic 8-Ball is a classic toy for finding out if your crush feels the same way about you or for finding out if the Soviets are about to invade your playground. While this may have been a fine toy for the 20th century, communication has changed quite a bit recently, so for today’s build DJ will be reimagining the technology for a more modern audience. Should you stick around and build your own? It is decidedly so.

It seems like a few of the components that were printed are missing from the resources package. The insert for the battery, and the insert for the tilt sensor seem to be missing from the folder.

Where did you get the file to print the battery retainer?  It's not in the pack I down loaded.

Working to recreate your amazing project, but it looks like the battery mounting clip wasn't included in the STLs. Would you be able to post an update that includes that part?

I am making one, I see the python file, and have printed everything and got all parts, but where do I store image files? in the same directory as the script. And what do I need to name them ? It looks like from the code it is something like "mgb_answer_1.gif"

    Any help would be appreciated.

What pins did you connect that button to?

Ok I got the script running and added gif files 1 to 24 and got the button connected. All seems to be working, except by screen is blank. I do see the backlight just no image. Any Ideas?

Update: Got mine working, I had used a different display and the driver was slightly different. I had to convert my gif to jpg then loop through them to animate the gif, but it looks great. I also changed the code to be less random, it now loops through all images once randomly then repeats so I do not see the same image twice, until we have gone through the whole list. I also made mine with a power cord. It takes 20 to 30 sec to boot, so I think it makes more sense to have it always on and it plays when you pick it up. I also used a tilt switch.

I would build this if all the parts were available in files.  Missing quite a bit.

    Thanks DAB!

I really enjoy talking about CAD in these kinds of builds. Glad it could be helpful!

    Thanks Pete!

It would take a redesign change to make it cleaner and have the usb charging port exposed. Since this is a pop it out and show friends for 5 minutes kind of build, right now it has to be popped open (which is quite easy) to charge and then resealed. I'm using the classic put it in RC.local method.
