We don't condone this as a method of dog training AT ALL, but in terms of electronics there are some interesting things going on inside this dog collar. Follow along as David tears it down to see what makes it work. Look after your pets people!

I can't help thinking of "Swordfish" when people mention the invisible fence deivces! If you haven't seen it, I'd reccomend it!

    Nice teardown.

I have used an invisible fence device for decades.

Very similar to your device and it does get the dog's attention when it goes off.

"...but it is very sharp and spikey...  it doesn't feel like a mains electric shock, which is all smooth and rounded ... and violent..."

    Thanks for the heads up!

I think comparing a TENS machine would be an interesting follow up?

I recall 'Big Clive' doing the 'not tested on animals' equivalent of this over on YouTube a while back...

A modified TENS machine that output around 120V. Be careful when using those DVM probes... Slight smile

Wow - I was prepared for cute, but this is another level! How old will (He / She?) be?

If this thread devolves into a cute pet thread, I'm OK with it!

I actually worked with one of those collars before..but you could remove the spikes so all that was left was a buzzer and a remote vibration....that was enough to train the dog. I never used the shock option..

I mean, you could use it as a training aid to beep and vibrate and I wouldn't have a problem with it. In fact, removing the transformer would save weight too!

Also - Send pictures, especially if it's a puppy!
