Sony WENA 3 Smart Watch Teardown -- Episode 82

In this episode of "Electronics Inside," host David explores the Sony Wena 3, a unique smart accessory or wristband that combines the charm of a classic timepiece with modern smart features. The Wena 3 comes with various accessories, including traditional mechanical movement timepieces and fancy straps, offering users a wide range of customization options. Despite its small size, the device boasts impressive water resistance, rated at 5 bar or 50 meters.

David highlights the challenges faced due to the Wena 3 being a Japan-only product, with all instructions, documentation, and the accompanying app available only in Japanese. He demonstrates the device's functionalities, showcasing its monochrome OLED touchscreen, fitness tracking capabilities, notifications, NFC payments (limited to Japanese locale services), and more. The device supports features like music control, Alexa integration, and a find my phone option.

During the teardown process, David discovers the fragility of the curved OLED display and the unique combination of connectors for the display and touchscreen. He explores various components, including the NFC antenna, sensors, battery, and motherboard, providing technical insights into their functions. Despite the limited repairability due to the sealed glass front, he commends the overall build quality and compact design of the Wena 3.

In conclusion, David expresses his appreciation for the Wena range and suggests that Sony considers expanding its availability beyond Japan. He sees potential in the device's ability to appeal to users who want a smart accessory that can be worn either as a standalone wristband or to enhance a traditional mechanical watch.

I did it in a professional setting, while wearing gloves, so used used every ounce of concentration I had to not let on what had just happened to the others in the room!

It wasn't too bad - if you can find one without the fancy mechanical time piece, they can go from pretty reasonable to outright cheap!  The cost of the unit with the mecahnical time piece goes from a 'fair chunk' to 'you really have to be a collector'.  I bought used and unboxed, so it all helps! Just because it turned on, doesn't mean the battery lasts or it was worth much!

We try and keep it as low a reasonably possible, it's not a fixed cost, but there has to be a reasonable value in it in terms of interest. And of course, every now and then we get a donation (Apple Watch) or a manufacturer (Garmin watch, RealPower Power bank) provide something that helps the overall budget!

Gnarly thumb David! Looks like the damage is history because a new nail is push through. Can you share the words you uttered when you suffered the injury?

Great inside look as usual. A few questions?

What was the cost of the unit and how did you purchase it if it was only sold in Japan? For that, how did you discover it?

It appeared to be working before you started. You indicated during the teardown a cracked screen. What the device sacrificed in the name of discovery? What sort of budget does E14 provide for teardowns:0

    Another great teardown.

By the way, what did you do to your thumb?

Discolored nails are the sign of something bad.
