There were also the photofacsimile machines from the 1950s which printed onto photographic materials, which had to then be developed in a photographic darkroom.

They were used by the likes of the Press agencies.

The Muirhead machines resembled a cross between an upright piano and a metalworking lathe.
The drum containing the photographic material was spun by a phonic motor which also via pawls and gears turned a precision lead screw which made it traverse across a light source modulated by a mirror galvanometer. They could achieve 300lines per inch resolution.
