Rewind to 1996 to find 10 year old me getting my first joystick, and playing Microsoft Flight Sim 95. Imagine how blown away I was when I discovered force feedback joysticks only a few years later! So - lets see what makes them tick!

As cool as they are for games, they boil down to pots! I suspect for motor control you'd do better with a rotary encoders?

Maybe, but encoders are not near as cool as controlling the three axis with a joystick. DAB

Cool tear down.
I picked up a couple of those complex types of joysticks at garage sales here in the US.
I was thinking about using one of them to control a CNC device I built a number of year ago.
I had the idea of installing a microscope with a camera attached and then using the joystick to scan across a circuit board or any other object to take close up looks at its surface features.

Still just thinking about it.

As cool as they are for games, they boil down to pots! I suspect for motor control you'd do better with a rotary encoders?
