In Karen’s most recent episode of The Learning Circuit, she shows off some of the most amazing types of transformers, the Tesla coil. Tesla coils are a type of step-up transformer that incorporates a special type, called a resonant transformer. These function at a high voltage and high frequency. That high frequency can be modulated to even play music. The visible sparks generated actually excite the air surrounding the coil, and make sound. Watch as Karen shows off 5 kits and see how incredible these transformers are.

    Hi Karen,

    Again, a very interesting video.

Sparks also permit the formation of nitrogen oxides. A very important phenomenon in nature. The nitrogen present in proteins and DNA is said to come from thunder sparks.

The two nitrogen atoms of the dinitrogen molecule are linked with a triple bond. These triple bond is very strong and requires a lot of energy to break. That is why dinitrogen is virtually inert. The very high energy of sparks can break this triple bond and allows nitrogen to react with atmospheric oxygen to form nitrogen oxides that dissolve in water to form nitrates.

    Thank you very much.
