After learning about shift registers, Karen shows how to use one in a circuit. Shift registers can take data from a single input and transfer it to multiple outputs or take data from multiple inputs and transfer it to a single output. In this video, Karen shows how to use a 4-bit, bidirectional shift register in a circuit. This shift register has 4 parallel inputs and outputs where data can be transferred. It also has two serial inputs, that can be used to shift data left or right across the 4 outputs.     Uses for the 194 chip were many.

    I have seen them used to take parallel data and then use the serial output to send the data over long distances and then use them to read out the parallel…

    Very good explanation.

     

    Uses for the 194 chip were many.

    I have seen them used to take parallel data and then use the serial output to send the data over long distances and then use them to read out the parallel data at a remote site. We did this when internet and ethernet were still in development.

     

    One very important use for this chip is to introduce a chirp signal for things like range finders. You enter the chirp code you want and then transmit the chirp out using the serial sequence for timing. The receiver picks up the returning signal and cycles the bits through until you match the chirp, signifying an accurate signal return. Quick, simple and easy to use, especially in noisy environments.
