In this video, Karen explains the difference between DC and AC while also talking about how AC can be found in DC circuits.     I hope the SCR controlled bridge rectifier is on your project list.  In the generator business, we use it all the time for voltage control (controlling excitation).  That... and it's just cool in and of itself - a variable AC to DC source.
