After just learning about alternating current, Karen solders and assembles a function generator kit in order to generate various waveforms. Once complete, Karen connects the function generator to her oscilloscope to see the various square, sine, and triangle waves. Check out the video to see what happens when Karen also connects a speaker and a string of LEDs!

    I've mounted my own and used it to measure the inductance of a home made inductor using the impedance formula, the RMS voltage and the frequency.

    Hi Karen,

     

    You can take an inexpensive mirror and just glue a tooth pick to the speaker and attach the other end to the mirror. Just support the other end of the mirror so that the speaker can move the other end.

    You hook up your signal generator to the speakers.

    Take a laser pointer and set it up with the beam hitting the mirror so that the reflection shows on a flat surface.

     

    As you generate signals, you should see the laser reflection move in response.

     

    It should be pretty easy to set up.

    It's double the fun with two as you can deflect the laser in both X and Y axis

    "This EE/Physics Student’s Oscilloscope Lab Guide and Tutorial is intended to be used with Keysight Technologies InfiniiVision 1000 X-Series oscilloscopes."

     

    The scope models with the 'G' suffix have the function generator built in.

    The lower cost non-generator equipped models also have some waveforms built into them, but no output connector, which is still useful for training purposes.

    Not really. I haven't played around with my Scope enough. I only have a pdf copy of the manual and I struggle to read that much digitally. Wish I had a printout. I didn't even realize my scope had a built in function generator.

    Oh that's really interesting. You'd hook the waveform generator up to the speaker? I don't think I understand how laser scanners work well enough to know how that would all work together.
