#badass Women Makers and Engineers Contest

About the Contest | Online Film Festival| Video Content Partners | Auditions | element14 presents

Meet the Winners of #badass Online Film Festival

element14 presents was launched in June of 2018 with a contest designed to discover new electronics engineer/maker/inventor talent capable of creating engaging electronics projects—and capturing the project creation on camera—so that we could release a new episode every Friday on the element14 Community.

element14 presents is enjoying great success; since going live in 2018 our YouTube channel has

•  Gained 40k subscribers (channel total: 664k)

•  Had 7.5million views (channel total:  65 million)

So why are we opening a new search?  We realize the gender mix of producers roughly matches that of employment statistics in the engineering industry.  But we aim to change things on our channel and provide a platform where women can be seen creating, engineering, and generally being their #badass selves.

Karen Corbeill, who joined our team as a member of The Ben Heck Show back in the summer of 2015 and took the lead on The Learning Circuit (which launched in March of 2017), didn't need to be a part of the contest.  She was already in!

You don't have to be the next Simone Giertz or Lady Ada  to enter (although wouldn't that be cool?). All you need is electronics skills, a video camera, and the desire to make a working project.

There are three phases to this competition—and a variety of prizes to win along the way.

Phase One - Auditions - CLOSED

Check out all the wonderful auditions we received!

Phase Two - Project Build - CLOSED

Phase Three - Online Film Festival (and Voting)

In May, we'll have a #badass Online Film Festival where members of the element14 Community will help us select the winners.

All women who participate will be considered to become Video Content Producers for element14 presents.  Our content producers receive their build components and monetary compensation for their videos that are featured  on element14 presents.

Prizes

Our Grand Prize will be a kit worth over $1,800 including a digital camera kit, lens and wireless lav mic to help you create professional looking videos.

And each of the top TEN finalists will receive a $500 award.

What is the Video Content Producer program?

If you have any questions about the Contest, please ask them in the comments below!

It is a good initiative, just not sure that everyone aspires to be badass. (It may be cool for some but it means different things to different people)

The intent with using "bad*ss women" was to take advantage of the phrase's (and hashtag's) ubiquity among women - in this aspect it only has positive connotations. http://badass-women.urbanup.com/ It may…

    Roxana,

Typically our episodes are 15 to 20 minutes long (sometimes slightly longer). So we would prefer you try and edit it down to that video length.

That being said if you feel that cutting the 7 minutes makes your video worse or less coherent we can work with you on it.

Let us know if you have any more questions.

    Thanks,

    Max

    Hello,

My video is almost 27 minutes long.

Is that ok or should I edit it?

    Thanks

Hi! I missed the first deadline, but am still interested in participating in Phase Two. Do I need to sign up anywhere to join? Also, is there a specific submission portal I should use to submit the video?

    Kind regards,

    Julia

sounds cool to me - take the time in your video to explain why it's cool to you!

The best videos on our channel are those where the presenter is excited about the project - it sounds like you'd have that covered if you did this project!

The subject matter is generally pretty interesting, especially how you went about figuring out the protocol. The presentation of course can make a big difference to its popularity, but it sounds like a good topic to me. There is lots of scope to show or discuss applications and effects created by the technology as well.

    Hi!

I'm possibly interested in entering the #badass women competition. I was wondering on what criteria would the entries be evaluated? In particular, does the project itself need to have universal appeal?

I ask because I've a project that would make for a good video — it's some encoder wheels for theatre lighting control. My unique selling point is I have reverse engineered the USB protocol used by the official control surface, so my project has more functionality than anyone's who is using the public API. To anyone in the lighting business who wants to run an ETC Nomad setup, this is a huge deal. But obviously if you don't do theatre lighting, you won't get why this is cool. Sure, my video could explain this, and I hope I could make something enjoyable to watch without background knowledge. But the fact remains that if you don't do theatre lighting, you wouldn't want to make one of these…

    Thanks,

    Amy
