Thanks to the element14 Community for all of the great ideas, while it was difficult, we had to distil all of the recommendations down to what would fit into one box (and fit our challenge).

Now while our contestants get to grips with the parts that were decided for what was to be in the box, you can take part in the competition with the box and to do so, you have the opportunity to win the box yourself!

OK then. In 2006 my wife was pregnant with our 3rd child, and had a miscarriage at 19 weeks. We were devasted and it was really hard to keep things together. But we had to, as there were the first two…

Well, I don't really have one big story, but I do love turning all kinds of things into something useful. The most notable story that I have is when I received one of those USB TV tuner dongles from a…

Looks an interesting selection of 'bit's. I have some similar parts already lying around, left over from other stuff so it could be fun to try something with an 'equivalent' box of bits to see what I could do. Bu then again, the sun is shining,, it's warm (at the moment anyway) and there is gardening to be done - or a garden ready for snoozing in, so I'll likely not get around to it. Maybe I'll just make something with a box instead. Or just make a box!

It's amazing what you can do with a couple of old pallets.

Dave, Impressive. It is also more clamps in one place than I have ever seen before. It also seems to be much better pallet wood than we get in the UK. Pity it didn't have a technique for 'unnailing'  the slats. I have tried drilling, crowbar and finally brute force with a big hammer. The big hammer approach works best for me but does tend to smash up a fair number of the slats. Still, I managed enough bits to make the planter.

It sounds like you might need to be introduced to the slide hammer nail puller image

    Dave,

I have not heard of or seen such a slide hammer before and my Dad definitely did not have one. However, I did eventually manage to get most nails out using a claw hammer which I then hammered using a lump hammer into the nail so that the claws cut into the metal of the nail. Then I hit the handle of the claw hammer with lump hammer to make a sort of impact hammer and that loosed most nails, even ones without heads. I might now have enough wood to make a small planter. Or, I go and find some more pallets.

Perhaps a strong contender for the next 'Cool Tools Awards' then ? image

I've only used one once. It was to get the side off a 12' long shipping crate. Some appear to be designed much better than others though, so choose wisely...
