Hey Moogle - an animatronic moose assistant

My wife and I went to see Evil Dead - The Musical, and I was entranced by the moose puppet on the wall. I thought "Heck, it would be easy enough to make an animatronics moose to have at home", so I set out on this project.

Basic plan steps are

  • Acquire moose head puppet
  • Acquire robotic arm + servos
  • Begin programming pi - Basically can use most of the Google AYO voice pieces, need to add some references to pulse audio to capture the sound as he's speaking, to use to move the mouth
  • Assemble pieces
  • Laugh a lot

Steps completed

Moose head puppet on the way from ebay!

Robotic arm on order

Google AYO kit reformatted back to original and programming has begun!

Made some modifications to the claw, and have it able to work a puppet mouth now. It's only slow because the pi is underpowered right now, I ran out of outlets. So its being powered by the USB port on…

really cool progress. I was looking at the google machine and found this link, I was trying to find other methods of articulation etc...I doubt it helps or gives any ideas with your current project, but…

For the claw modifications, I took out the 2 pieces circled, set the other arms to be straight and then fully tightened them. They originally were set as loose, with a locking nut so that they could bend at that point, allowing the 2 ends to stay more or less parallel. This way they open and close in a more or less straight V. I then took some plastic foam that was used to pack resin bottles, cut it to fit inside the puppet and made holes in the center of the pieces for the armsimage

I like the way you have carried out this little modification to get the type of movement you desired. Well thought out.

    Kind regards.

Thanks. I'm trying to keep it as simple as I can, as I've already spent about double the budget I expected to. (and 4x as much time) Mostly due to my double order of robot arms, then addon pi boards. And the moose puppet was fairly expensive, ended up around $140 with shipping
