My first 3D prints.

29 May 2018

Greetings,

I have moved one step closer to living in the modern era.  After much thinking, researching and a lot of agonizing, I bought a 3D printer.  I settled on the Monoprice Maker

Hi Luis, I have opted for Fusion 360. It is available for free for makers and small business (startup making less than $100,000). It is a very complete and complex environment, but slowly it starts to…

Congratulations Gene! I have been wanting to get started with 3D printing and laser cutting for the longest time - almost as long as i have been unemployed (a very long time). I started a work practice position a couple of weeks ago at the Teknisk Museum (Technical Museum) in Oslo where they have a maker space and are in the process of creating one more because of the interest. The existing one has two UltiMaker 2, and in the new one they plan on having 16 Ultimaker 2+! They just purchased (from Farnell, by the way) 3 Raspi cameras and 3 Raspberry Pi 3 model B+ on which i have downloaded and installed an OctoPrint (Raspbian Stretch) images and configured it for Norwegian environment (character set, keyboard, ...), but without any concrete knowledge or experience with 3D printing i have requested that someone else complete the configuration for the printers. All this has peaked my interest even more, and i have been trying to learn more about it. Would have loved to get my own printer to play around with, but there is no way that is going to happen in these circumstances.

Began by investigating the UltiMaker printers, but their prices are so far out in the realm of fantasy for me (actually, all 3D printers are) that i started investigating others - specifically the Prusa i3 MK3. Still way out there in fantasy land, but a great deal cheaper and SO NICE!!! Anyway, if you are anything like me i can imagine how happy you are to finally be able to get started with it. A new world to explore which i am sure will give your making interests a whole new dimension! Enjoy!!!

    Hi Gene,

Sounds like a really useful purchase. I look forward to seeing some of your first prints and/or combined with your future projects.

I'm still trying to make my own based on the RepRap Prusa i3 style - I'm hoping that if I can print reasonable bits for a new RepRap I'll be able to gradually perfect my contraption in several iterations. Currently none of the parts are printed and I'm using metal/wood and glue to build something up. The linear bearings I purchased were very poor quality so I made my own with glassfibre tape, epoxy resin and polyethylene from an old milk carton. Currently it is sat on the worktop gathering dust image

Congrats genebren, that is a good investment for DIY; tons of hours waiting for your part to come out of fun are guaranteed! and also some headaches image.

Have you decided what 3-D modeling software are you planing to use?. For ready-to-print parts thingiverse is your friend.

    Enjoy!

    Luis

    Hi Gene,

I will have to pick your brain, once you have spent some time with your new toy. I've been think too, for long time now, to get one, but never really had the time to look into it and do my "homework". I would be very interested on what your experience will be.
