I spent some time connecting my Arduino MKR1010 to the Arduino IoT Cloud and trying out some of the examples.  Everything ran as expected, so this would be a viable implementation option.  After ruminating some more, I've decided to go with the RPi0W using the Cayenne Cloud platform.  I chose the RPi approach because I think it provides some additional implementation flexibility and hopefully it will be easier to develop a touch based GUI interface.

I've decided that it makes sense to implement in two phases.  The initial phase would be to replace the functionality of the existing electromechanical sprinkler controller with a Cloud based controller.  This would be my Project14 entry.  The second phase would add options for standalone operation and enhanced scheduling.  I'll detail the two phases below.

Phase One

  • 4 zone control
  • two week scheduling range (select any day or every day)
  • 0-60 minute operation per zone
  • start time is the same for every day
  • zone duration is the same for every day
  • zone sequence is the same for every day
  • manual operation available - only triggers programmed sequence
  • local touch screen control/programming/status
  • remote cloud based control/programming/status
  • mobile app control/programming/status
  • cloud based time and schedule
  • USB Power Supply for RPi and Display

Phase Two

  • calendar based scheduling
  • unique start time and duration per zone per calendar day
  • independent manual control of each zone (local/remote/mobile)
  • battery backup (UPS) with power down and auto reboot sequences
  • AC/DC converter (power the UPS from the 24VAC transformer)
  • local schedule backup (runs if cloud not available)
  • RTC - sync to cloud
  • weather aware - inhibit if rain is forecast

Most of the Phase Two effort will be programming but I'll need to add a few pieces of hardware (UPS, RTC, AC/DC converter, power down circuit).  I'll size the enclosure that I use to accommodate the additional hardware.

Bill of Materials (Phase One)

  • Raspberry Pi 0W
  • 5 inch 800x480 HDMI Touch Screen Monitor
  • Bud Industries NBF-32012NBF-32012 Plastic Electrical Box
  • Sainsmart 4 Channel Relay Module
  • RainBird 24VAC 1.25A Transformer (Model 57A-24-1250)
  • 1.5A Fuse with holder (TBD)
  • Power switch (TBD)
  • Misc 3D printed panels and hardware
  • Micro USB power supply 5V 2.5A
  • HDMI to Micro HDMI cable

Looks like a great project, Ralph.

Hope it all goes to plan
