Inspiration

This project started when I was so busy with the daily schedules that I could not give my time to my gardening tasks and all my plants really lacked water and moisture. So I thought Why not just create an automated gardening project so that my plant's needs will be automatically fulfilled. So in my school time, I created a project "determining soil moisture values using sensor". I left this project during my school time and then thought why not just continue my project and create an automating plant watering system. So, this idea came to my mind while sitting on the shelf and I started working on it. This is so cool sometimes that some wonderful ideas related to reusability are in our unconscious brain always, we just need to think a little about them.

Nowadays, people are very busy with their schedule and they do not take care of the plants. Most people are too lazy to water the potted plants on their rooftop gardens every day during summers. So, we have made a system that automatically waters the plant according to its need.

What it does

The soil moisture sensor used in our project senses the soil's moisture level and if the moisture level is low, the plant is automatically watered according to its requirement.

Built With

  • micro: bit
  • soil-moisture-sensor
  • 3v submersible pump
  • Crocodile clips
  • Transistor
  • Bread Board
  • Batter Power Pack
  • M-M wire for connection as well as a battery to supply power to the micro: bit.

 Insert the two nails into the acrylic spacer with the markings Input, 3V, and GND until the spacer is around 5mm from the nail heads.

 Insert the red/black 3V cable into the back of the green input cable.

 Attach a crocodile clip to the green input cable and the black GND cable. (Crocodile clip should be attached to the green input cable on the end with the red/black 3V cable attached).

 Insert the 4mm cables into the micro: bit as described below.

  • Green to P0
  • Red/black to 3V
  • Black to GND

 Slide the second acrylic spacer onto the nails.

 Insert the nails about 50mm into the soil that you wish to use.

 Attach the cables via the crocodile clips onto the heads of the nails as described below.

  • Green and red/black to Input 3V
  • Black to GND

 Your soil moisture sensor is now connected.

 Attach the cables to the following micro: bit connections.

  • Green to P1
  • Red to 3V
  • Black to GND

 Connect the flexible tube to the output of the pump.

 Place the pump into the bowl of water. (The pump is submersible)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our project because we have built a system that takes care of our environment which is very important in today's era.
