In June of 2018, I purchased three Pimoroni 1.3” SPI Colour Square LCD (240X240) Breakouts . Only one Breakout was required for the project.
This hardware was for an article I was writing for LinuxFormat magazine on learning the SPI protocol using a Raspberry Pi. Unfortunately, viewing the article is by subscription:( To finish the article, I used the Breakout to build a model Railroad Layout Billboard animation project.
I ordered three Breakouts. One for the billboard project. A second unit in the event I bricked the first unit and a third. I had discovered this animation video of a television set and hoped to build something similar. My plan after completing the billboard project was to use the knowledge and extra hardware to make a television animation.
I checked the dates before posting. It was 2018, when I purchased the extra hardware to make the television animation project. It is now 2025. I never built the animation. The model railroaders I am working with are building an office tower. This blog post is for the elevator in the tower. The penthouse suite has a large screen television piece of furniture. Why not make the television screen animated?
I was working on the project’s code when E14 Community released this Spring Clean Challenge. Starting a project that was considered seven years ago comes with challenges. I plan to share the challenges I faced with this project as I work towards animating a television. The Pi hardware changed. The programming language changed. Finally, I’ve changed. I can only find one Breakout! Let’s hope I don’t brick the unit because there is no spare this time around.
