Spring Clean - Person Locator Second try

The project that I'm going to try to finish as part of my spring cleaning is something that I had started back in December 2022 as part of the Build a Smarter World Contest run by Blues Wireless on Hackster.IO.  It appears that it's been long enough ago that all of my links no longer work.  I had to drop out of that contest because of a death in the family and I never could get motivated to finish it.  I still have my draft project that I had started documenting on Hackster.

Here is the overview of the Application for hardware that I submitted October 26 that year.

"I am going to build a cellular based person recognition device with geolocation. I will use a Nicla Vision board with the ML model developed using Edge Impulse. The Nicla Vision will interface with a Swan Feather board and send notifications and location via the Cellular Notecard."

I received a Blues Cellular notecard and carrier to participate in the contest.

It appears that I had completed my hardware and software selection and as I am prone to do - I had 3D printed a case for the proto hardware assembly and had started to try out some software.  I had created a github repository that has no code in it.

I had started using OpenMV with the Nicla Vision and Arduino IDE with the Swan but only test code and had not started on an Edge Impulse model.  So I need to review where things really are and whether it makes sense to modify my approach since I am older and hopefully wiser now.

That's an interesting thought. That would just require swapping out the model. I do submit to iNaturalist. I'll have to see what it would take to auto-upload. I usually just do these projects for learning…

One I've used allows bulk uploading from a spreadsheet. Not sure if they have an web API. You perhaps need to attach them to your eBike. It's funny how extreme fascinator hats are considered fashionable…

Did you have a specific application in mind for this beyond a learning exercise ?

Mobile law enforcement jumps to mind.

However, if you swap person for nature, then you could perhaps identify flora and fauna whilst out on your walks and have them automatically submitted to nature websites. Sounds like something a citizen science project could make good use of.

I usually just do these projects for learning and to use new hardware and software.  So most are just POC and not for practical use.  I've done a couple of dog related projects that I actually used for a while (cellular tracker to map dog walks and a dog mounted camera).  I had them mounted on a rain jacket so the dog didn't really care for them.  Weren't that heavy but I guess she didn't like the feel of something extra on her back.  To be fair I've done ballcap mounted projects that I've worn but I think that embarrassed the wife...

It's funny how extreme fascinator hats are considered fashionable yet a little bit of experimental tech doesn't seem to cut it...
