Danger Will Robinson, it's back off the shelf

The Spring Clean competition inspired me me to pull another project off the archive shelf.

It's unlikely to be done for spring, but it doesn't need to be, it's a Halloween project.

In the movie Predator,  the alien has a weapons controls panel on his forearm.

I started a project to use a similar forearm mounting for a video screen with an old fashioned green CRT radar display.

First choice was a functional display using a rotating ToF sensor, lidar, or the like. Second choice was just playing a video that looked like radar is working.

The project went dormant because of the cost of lidar sensors, and complexity of the layered animation. Even just getting a video o play had some unexpected costs and complications.

I have the Rpi with a touchscreen, ready to start. I was going to add discrete io around it for effect, maybe even controls for auxiliary equipment to go with the costume. The costume is a grownup Lost in Space Will Robinson, with a plethora of spacey gadgets and gizmos.

I mention the project here to welcome additional  ideas for the radar display.

I'm way over my head with this one. Halloween is my stretch goal. January 2026, my robot club is presenting a kids robotic program "Ducks with Hammers"at a local scifi convention. This would be a raspberry…

My grandson has recently been playing with Paw Patrol toys and his parents let him watch Paw Patrol videos while changing diapers (thank goodness diapers are almost over).  Paw Patrol is a Canadian product that is a bit long in the tooth but still available so we bought him a set of figures and vehicles.  Lately he has been pretending that he has a wrist communicator for the human character to call the pups for missions.  He'll put things on his wrist and pretend that he is pushing buttons and communicating.  The Paw Patrol show was essentially a long commercial for their toys and I think that I found the communicator that he is pretending to use.  Unfortunately,  I don't think that's been available for years Disappointed.

Your post made me think about building him one for his birthday in August.  I'll have to see what types of touch screens or screens with buttons that I have in the parts bin.

Something like the 4.3" or 7" ESP32-S3 Touch LCD using LGVL for the display animation might be worth a look for this sort of application.

I'll take a look at those.  I had been thinking of combining two smaller displays - a round touch display and a square non-touch - mainly because I already have them and the round display accommodates a range of Xiao MCUs.  The overall footprint on the wrist would be slightly smaller than a 4.3" display.

I don't want to highjack this thread so I'll start a separate post when I get further along.

That communicator looks like it uses a lenticular lens display with interchangeable image cards and then a button panel to trigger the associated sound effects. A tilt sensor could be used to flip between different images to get a similar sort of result.
