OK, as promised, here is a simple schematic (pretty stripped down as I didn't have time to dust off Orcad).  I tried to lay it out so that it can be followed left to right, top to bottom.  I think I captured most of the big points, but please point out something if you think I missed it (or have a question).

 

SCHEMATIC IS JUNK FOR BEING A COTTON HEADED NINNY MUGGINS! WILL ADD A LINK TO AN UPDATED ONE WHEN I POST. LEAVING THIS UP AS A LEARNING EXERCISE, DO NOT USE!

  • Here is an example of what I was talking about. I am not an expert and once the other guys check out your posting they may say you were right and my ideas are off. The guys will also perhaps have suggestions for the values of the resistors for the pull up and buffers between the 3914 and the 7414 and the MOSFET. I would tell you what I have used but it would just be a guess.

    Thanks for the time John.  You are right on many points.  Full disclosure, I am off visiting my in-laws and figured I might have some "work" that needed to get done image , so I was attempting to recreate it from memory and the youtube videos.  I should pop off the enclosure when I get home and take some good pics for everyone (and me).

     

    I made a ton of mistakes and you were absolutely correct just by looking at it.  Let me do some more "work" and clean this up the best I can.  I apologize as this was a poor way of releasing information.  Look for an update soonly!
