I guess the suggestion box moved here so I will reiterate one idea I mentioned earlier and add one: - a classroom demonstration of some physics phenomenon ( jc2048 had some good ideas ) - a solar powered…

Keeping with July and (northern hemisphere) Summer time, I like Douglas' ideas. Demonstration of physical phenomenon for classroom is a great avenue, I was thinking lots of solar stuff. Charging systems…

The fourth one is basically a scaled down forge hammer, so not really useless...

    I vote for:   Useless Machines.

Any machine that is utterly futile and do nothing of any use other than being a curiosity, example:

There is a 2TB portable drive with a built in computer and video display that allows the user to transfer their video and still images from their camera, cell phone or drone SD cards to the built in hard drive.

The LaCie DJI CoPilot Drive 2TB Portable Drive for Drone Footage - with Integrated Status Screen and SD Card Slot.(STGU2000400)

I don't have a use for another 300+ device and I think that a device can be built at a lower cost that is more useful to the end user using the Raspberry PI or other mini computer.

Specifications for the device. After all, we must have specifications if we are to out do the commercial competition.

    1. The project must have a touch screen for user ease.

    2. The case of the device must be able to attach to any standard 2.5 external portable drive.

    3. The device must be able to handled 2TB MBR drives as well as 2TB and larger GPT drives

    4. The device must have UBS 3.1 ports

    5. The device must have an on board SD card reader.

OK, I suggested the device, it's up to others to vote for it.

I would love to build a Bender. There is nothing like a Beer drinking, Burping, Flaming Flatulent Robot.

However, the Olympics are coming up so perhaps something in line with supporting your favorite Athlete, Country and/or Country.  Something like LED ground effects for a Luge or an on board Big Air indicator for Snowboarding on the Halfpipe (well maybe Intel already has/had that with the Curie) or self correcting Curling Stone (is that cheating?).

    A few theme suggestions:

    • timers (for cooking, work meetings or any other reminder)
    • thermometers (environment, food, body, car...)
    • weather stations
    • remote monitoring/controlling devices - all kind of devices that are not easily accessible (not necessarily with radio communication), for example battery powered devices made to last as long as possible
    • robots with wheels - anything that drives on the floor or in the garden and helps with some everyday activity
    • energy savings (power, heat, ...)

Also, some competitions could be made using an additional restriction - cost of components, make sensible use of some specific component, etc. It is sometimes more challenging to see what can people do with the same equipment.
