I have often wondered about the small ways in which we can re-use the electronics and waste less paper. I had an idea as of why not use less bulky electronic name tags which are easily rewritable and can be re-used by re-programming the display. So I decided to jump in last minute into this challenge by making one for myself which I can use in the future.

The components

  • MAX7219 Dot Matrix Module For Arduino
  • Adruino Nando as it is small and portable
  • A small portable battery.
  • With some Arduino code

Connect them to the Arduino Nano using SPI bus DIN and SCLK. The LED matrix needs high voltage bias

Conclusion

In my understanding re-usable electronics is the new way ahead.

Thats a good idea. The intensity of the leds is indeed an important issue. Designing a simple dimmer circuit to control the signal flow in the led panel would be a good idea but I then again I don't want…

Hi Dixon, Yes the image is reversed on purpose so the correct image can be seen when you put it on or also in the camera. It is for other to read it correctly and reversed for self. Cheers

Sounds like it might be good fun. I'll have to see if it is a possibility for me.

yes, if you are planning to visit Maker Faire in Europe I would definitely goto Rome. It is like a big hub of all makers from Europe. A lot of german and british makers also showcase there alongside the locals. I also volunteered last time at Hannover Maker Faire so that is something you can also do. I got a shirt and free entry tickets to the faire with family. Then there is coffee and lunch coupons as well. And they also give you some time to look around. But anyways the entry tickets are not that expensive.

But the experience is totally worth it specially with the kids. There are also many small independent businesses and start-ups who showcase their newest and best products.

Well, Rome seems a possibility. My wife wants to go to Italy, I wonder if she would notice if I slipped in a visit to a Maker Faire. I see that RS are in attendance. Do Farnell attend any Maker Faires anyone?)

There are many Maker Faire in Europe and I think they are also quite big in the United States. In Germany since last few years they have become very popular as well. I am not sure if there is something similar going on in the rest of the world. I think may be each country has their own version of it. The biggest one in Europe occurs in Rome Italy. I hope to make there some time in the future.
