LEGO's Powered Up Kits adds more DIY functionality to their new toy sets

LEGO has developed a way for their customers to code and connect to play services using a Powered Up platform that makes these an option - even if it isn't something that's intended. In this scenario, some sets will have full programming and mobile device control while others will be remotely controlled or powered and others will be regular LEGO Kits with Powered Up support only as an option.

LEGO previously used this idea in connected toys which allow kids to build up a variety of items, coding them and then controlling them via an app.

The sets being introduced by the Powered Up line will have multiple products that range in complexity instead of having it use one set that can build multiple toys. Some sets may be controlled via a battery, remote control or even through the app connected to a phone or tablet. Some of these will already be shipped along with the sets, but additional accessories can be purchased to add more features to their sets.

The first kit that's being introduced is the Batman App Controlled Batmobile - which uses a tablet or phone to steer the car and will eventually have added functionality in coding support to alter both performance - speed, direction, duration and sound of the Batmobile. It can be controlled on the Companion Android / iOS app or through a remote that can be personalized with sliders or buttons. It's also possible to customize the remote controls on the vehicle. It ships in stores on August 1st for $100 but there will also be other options to choose from. It includes 321 pieces, 2 motors, and a battery hub. The Boost kit costs $159.99 at release and will include an extra motor, combination color and a distance sensor along with 843 LEGO pieces.

The other options are available a month earlier, on July 1st and they include LEGO City Passenger train and the LEGO City Cargo train sets with basic remote control, Duplo trains with sensors and color-coded tracks. Anyone who wishes to go further into programming with the LEGOs can choose to do so using a Ninjago dragon, an Arctic Scout truck and an expert-level roller coaster.
