Such activities are a lot of fun and a great learning experience I'm sure - especially when they involve exciting challenges and problem-solving.
But I did think it was a bit mean that students/classes have to purchase the official kit ($1995) and cannot use any of their own designs or hardware.
Maybe I didn't understand the entire reasoning for it though.
I agree - but I think the intent is for the students to apply for grants. They recommended DonorsChoose.org "makes it easy for educators to post fund requests for classroom projects"
On the other hand, I could see how this would take a lot of the headache of the organizers (teachers) and would also even the playing field.
"Each UAS4STEM kit is $1995.00. This cost is fixed, but a team with 8 members would cost less per team member than a team with only 4 members. This includes entry fee costs for regional and national competitions. This does not include expenses or travel to and from a contest site."
