The Great micro:bit Education Giveaway - Winners!

 

Back to School season is upon us! For many students and educators, the month of August signifies a return to school, and to shopping for the classroom. This past June, members of the element14 Community team were able to attend the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) convention, which took place this year in Chicago. We stood guard at the micro:bit booth, not only to help the great people from the foundation handle the onslaught of questions about the micro:bitmicro:bit, but also to learn more about this wonderful SBC.

 

One of the most impactful things we learned while we were in attendance was that teachers of all grade-levels and experience were keen to integrate the micro:bit into their curriculum, but many voiced that they did not have the budget nor the technical expertise to do so. While the micro:bit Educational Foundation provides a wide array of resources to get started, they unfortunately cannot give the boards away for free.

This is where we come in! We were so inspired by all of the educators we got to speak with that our fearless leader, Dianne Kibbey, the Global Head of the element14 Community tasked us to come up with a program to get micro:bit into the hands of as many learners as possible.

 

So, with that in mind, we bring you our Great micro:bit Education Giveaway!

Phase 1:

 

We will be giving our 25 selected contestants micro:bit Clubmicro:bit Club packs, which each contain 10 micro:bit boards, battery adapters, batteries, and USB cables. The micro:bit is a global product, so this contest is open to all countries!

 

Phase 1 is now complete! Thank you so much for all your entries, they're amazing and we can't wait to read them (we've gotten a head start on that, to tell the truth). Please feel free to continue discussing the contest in the comments section here, but unfortunately we can no longer accept new applications. Everyone who has submitted prior to this note being added is considered an applicant.

 

To enter, please:

 

1) Register on the Community, if you are not yet a member.

 

2) In the comments section below on this document, post your answers to the following questions:

 

• Who are you? What is your background as an educator? And don't worry, we're welcoming educators of all levels of experience. If you're trying to help students learn about coding and working with electronics, we want you! (Please do not post your address or other personal information in your application here, just general information about your background. Feel free to use your username if you'd prefer not to post your full name.)

 

• How would you use these micro:bits in your classroom, after school club, or wherever you might be trying to help others learn to code?

 

Enrollment begins August 20th, 2018. You will have until September 19th to submit your application as a comment on this document, after which our team will review the applications and select the participants on September 24th. We've chosen to place these applications in the comments on this document so that you can discuss your plan with other educators, give tips to those whose work is similar to yours, and so you can potentially be inspired by them!

Congratulations to our selected winners! We have decided to give away 25 micro:bit Club packs due to how many amazing entries we received. We will be contacting the selected members via email shortly about the next steps, so please respond no later than October 1st, 2018. Due to trade regulations, it is possible that certain countries will be disallowed for shipping, but this is (thankfully!) very rare.

We have also selected alternates should those listed above not respond or if we are not able to ship to their countries. Once you receive your Club pack you can get started on Phase 2!

 

Phase 2:

 

Once you are selected as a winner, you will have 10 weeks to implement you project plan and document it on the Community. Your blogs / vlogs must be posted to the community by December 3rd. The documentation requirements will be the following:

 

1) Write up a blog (or do a video blog) about your project.

 

2) Your blog or vlog must have a syllabus/lesson plan that includes the following information:

 

• what ages and/or grade-level(s) it's aimed toward

• what subject/s does it cover

• what are the project goals

• step-by-step instructions including any print-outs, bill of materials (BOM)

• photos and/or videos

 

On December 10th we will select three (3) educators who have completed their documentation on the Community to win a prize pack of micro:bit accessories and other items that will expand the potential of this powerhouse little board. To be eligible as a contestant and to potentially receive prizes you must submit your comments and blogs according to the schedule of dates below. Also, see below for prize details.

    Hi my name is David and I teach in a rural community where my students have limited exposure to computer education. While my school is located just about 100 miles from the Silicon Valley, my students rarely have the opportunity to be so closely in touch with technological advances such as micro:bit. This would be a great opportunity for myself, my students and my school community to have the latest in computer technology innovation and education brought to their doorstep. I have 18 years of experience in teaching computer and industrial technology classes. My approach to teaching is to share knowledge not only with my students with my school community.  I train school staff and provide technology support as my school site’s Lead Technology Support person. I am also part of my school district’s, 21st Century Learning Committee where I provide feedback and guidance for our district wide technology implementation plans. I plan on sharing my knowledge of micro:bit with my school community and district to help all our students grades K-8 advance their knowledge in this area.

    Micro:bit easily fits into my present curriculum. Currently, my students learn about programming and game programming through code.org and Scratch. Managing micro:bit projects will allow my students to grow in the areas of computer programming, robotics, real-life construction, mechanical engineering, electronics, LED Lighting and wireless networking to name a few. Micro:bit projects also support the 4C’s and STEAM education through the development of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Through micro:bit students will also learn technical skills such as adapting software, troubleshooting, team building, construction, and soldering. My English Language Learners will also benefit from developing their awareness of technological terms and following a step by step process. Most of all micro:bit will allow my

    I teach Game Design at a small college in the Pennsylvania.

    One of my classes running between now and December has a project already on the syllabus, where students have to work together to make a technology-based game in the real world. (not a video game!)

     

    Using the radio port and other sensors on the micro:bits, the students would design and implement a game where their movement or motion in the real world is fundamental to the game. They will program the micro:bits to communicate between each other and alert the players as to the game's progress and outcome.

     

    The Phase 2 timeline fits perfectly with our semester, and documentation that  I already do in many of my classes! What a great opportunity!

    I am a CS grad from Troy University. I homeschool my children and I am assisting a homeschool co-op group in a robotics team. Our first goal was to get the kids knowledgeable about the Raspberry Pi and Arduino so as to guide them into building their own 3d printers. We will be guiding them through Scratch so they will have an understanding of sequential programming and then into the Arduino IDE.

     

    The Micro:Bit controllers could help the kids understand that while a Raspberry Pi is a functional computer there are other microcontrollers out there and the differences between it and an Arduino. 

     

    The corriculum has been designed by me, but I have pulled some ideas from other sources.

    Hello, my name is Darrell Little and I'm the Education Coordinator for a non-profit organization called Noke Codes. I have been working in the IT field as an analyst/programmer for the past 15 years. Noke Codes provides STEM/STEAM workshops for students age 9-18 in a series called "Learn To Program, Roanoke!" We have been participating with Hour of Code each December for the past 3 years.  Last year we introduced the BBC micro:bit at Hour of Code and it was a big hit.  The future plans are to offer more workshops this fall in partnership with our local county libraries and also make the mico:bit available to check-out at the library. The goal is build up an inventory of 30-40 micro:bits for the workshops and loan program.  Thank you for this great opportunity!

    The community college where I teach is setting up a "maker space" with 3D printers, a vinyl cutter, and some micro controllers.  We don't have all the equipment we'd like to have, but I was fortunate enough to be the instructor for our first class for students sponsored by Intel.  This was the first time I had "facilitated" with micro:bits.  As stated by others, the students, ranging in age from 12 to 19 years all took to the micro:bits readily.

    We'd like to expand our space with a laser cutter, sewing machines, more micro-controllers, woodworking tools, and a CNC machine.

    I'm a hands-on, collaborative, and inspiring IT and STEM Teacher. I enjoy teaching students all about the fun aspects of coding. We learn in a collaborative learning STEM lab. I have been a classroom teacher for the last few years and enjoy new challenges. This summer I attended ISTE and was amazed at the diverse array of learning experiences available for students. We love to learn new things. A code pack would be a great way to involve all students.

    My students love technology and participating in hands-on projects. They want a unique hands-on learning experience. They want to be innovative, involved in project-based learning, and desire the ability to participate in unique experiences they may not otherwise receive.

    Our students are a unique, diverse, collaborative, and multi-talented set of thinkers. We speak different programming languages and come from places all over the world. We are starting a new school year after the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Irma. Our students have a knack for challenge-based learning, hands-on projects, coding, and programming. Providing unique opportunities in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) education is vital for 21st-century learning. Coding, making, and augmenting are pillars of our learning environment. Our students are resilient and persistent about learning.

    I'm Nitin Mane from India and persuading Electronics and telecommunication Degree from BAMU University, Aurangabad. I'm electronics hobbyist which run seminars and workshop on trending hardware. I've being working on the Internet of things, AI, Embedded System, VLSI, Robotics etc projects from last 4 years. Currently, i'm working on the Artificial Intelligent project. I have worked with various microcontrollers, sensors, actuators, ECU, PLC and Data Acquisition Systems. I would like to learn and develop demo projects and teach to teachers and kids on tech projects or parents who help their children on tech projects. I am willing to provide a full blogs of the product with the supporting material within by December 3rd and like to work on Embedded System Platform.

    My name is Philippe Richer, and I am a software developer in Québec, Canada. I live in a rural area, where STEM activities provided to children are few and not very popular. Since I'm a father of four, my kids have been exposed to STEM from an early age and are now quite fluent in programming, electronics and mechanical engineering. I am putting together a STEM club, to offer to the kids of my community the same exposure to new technologies as my kids had. I strongly believe that the future of our societies rely on today's kids having an understanding of STEM and a contact with it from an early age is a good way to achieve this. My goal is not for all these kids to be better at programming or electronics (good if it is!), but we need tomorrow's doctors, mathematicians, financial analysts, caregiver, teachers, farmers, etc. to be able to interact with technologies. I don't think everyone should be a programmer, but I think that everyone should understand that a well-programmed software or a well designed electronic device, in sync with society's need for innovation and productivity, is a valuable tool to success.

     

     

    Our club offers children a space and a time for sharing ideas and to experiment with any ideas they come up with. I am putting together a system that offers them a diverse "track" to accomplish projects, on their own, based on many smaller activities where they build up their knowledge of programming, electricity, electronics and robotics. After every activity session, they can share with other kids what they accomplished. We have a database of activities they can accomplish, and the Micro:bits products would fit perfectly in allowing the kids to expand the range of activities they can do.

     

     

    I've worked in the past with products from Micro:bits, and they are great, well-made products. They are quite expensive though, and our club sure can't afford them. We certainly could use these products to offer to kids from our rural areas the opportunity to experiment beyond more simple activities using arduinos.

    Hi, I'm the founder of a not for profit school-makerspace/fablab in Upland, CA called   UMakers       We startup Startups! One of our startups is Be A Maker Club  (They are located 50 feet away) Their contract teachers are also members of our makerspace for big kids. They also have near-term goals of going mobile to serve the region. I'd like to get these kits for them/us. Thanks
