The Great micro:bit Education Giveaway - Winners!

 

Back to School season is upon us! For many students and educators, the month of August signifies a return to school, and to shopping for the classroom. This past June, members of the element14 Community team were able to attend the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) convention, which took place this year in Chicago. We stood guard at the micro:bit booth, not only to help the great people from the foundation handle the onslaught of questions about the micro:bitmicro:bit, but also to learn more about this wonderful SBC.

 

One of the most impactful things we learned while we were in attendance was that teachers of all grade-levels and experience were keen to integrate the micro:bit into their curriculum, but many voiced that they did not have the budget nor the technical expertise to do so. While the micro:bit Educational Foundation provides a wide array of resources to get started, they unfortunately cannot give the boards away for free.

This is where we come in! We were so inspired by all of the educators we got to speak with that our fearless leader, Dianne Kibbey, the Global Head of the element14 Community tasked us to come up with a program to get micro:bit into the hands of as many learners as possible.

 

So, with that in mind, we bring you our Great micro:bit Education Giveaway!

Phase 1:

 

We will be giving our 25 selected contestants micro:bit Clubmicro:bit Club packs, which each contain 10 micro:bit boards, battery adapters, batteries, and USB cables. The micro:bit is a global product, so this contest is open to all countries!

 

Phase 1 is now complete! Thank you so much for all your entries, they're amazing and we can't wait to read them (we've gotten a head start on that, to tell the truth). Please feel free to continue discussing the contest in the comments section here, but unfortunately we can no longer accept new applications. Everyone who has submitted prior to this note being added is considered an applicant.

 

To enter, please:

 

1) Register on the Community, if you are not yet a member.

 

2) In the comments section below on this document, post your answers to the following questions:

 

• Who are you? What is your background as an educator? And don't worry, we're welcoming educators of all levels of experience. If you're trying to help students learn about coding and working with electronics, we want you! (Please do not post your address or other personal information in your application here, just general information about your background. Feel free to use your username if you'd prefer not to post your full name.)

 

• How would you use these micro:bits in your classroom, after school club, or wherever you might be trying to help others learn to code?

 

Enrollment begins August 20th, 2018. You will have until September 19th to submit your application as a comment on this document, after which our team will review the applications and select the participants on September 24th. We've chosen to place these applications in the comments on this document so that you can discuss your plan with other educators, give tips to those whose work is similar to yours, and so you can potentially be inspired by them!

Congratulations to our selected winners! We have decided to give away 25 micro:bit Club packs due to how many amazing entries we received. We will be contacting the selected members via email shortly about the next steps, so please respond no later than October 1st, 2018. Due to trade regulations, it is possible that certain countries will be disallowed for shipping, but this is (thankfully!) very rare.

We have also selected alternates should those listed above not respond or if we are not able to ship to their countries. Once you receive your Club pack you can get started on Phase 2!

 

Phase 2:

 

Once you are selected as a winner, you will have 10 weeks to implement you project plan and document it on the Community. Your blogs / vlogs must be posted to the community by December 3rd. The documentation requirements will be the following:

 

1) Write up a blog (or do a video blog) about your project.

 

2) Your blog or vlog must have a syllabus/lesson plan that includes the following information:

 

• what ages and/or grade-level(s) it's aimed toward

• what subject/s does it cover

• what are the project goals

• step-by-step instructions including any print-outs, bill of materials (BOM)

• photos and/or videos

 

On December 10th we will select three (3) educators who have completed their documentation on the Community to win a prize pack of micro:bit accessories and other items that will expand the potential of this powerhouse little board. To be eligible as a contestant and to potentially receive prizes you must submit your comments and blogs according to the schedule of dates below. Also, see below for prize details.

    I am a teacher in a rural area of Italy. I teach coding and robotics in after-school labs. I have been teaching for three years now. I love how students can create amazing things with raw materials. I like giving students  tools can help them to develop their creativity and micro:bit is one of the best. I have been using it for sometime and students are both fascinated and entusistic about it! I would like to give more students the possibility to try it out and to experiment with this tool.     Hi, my name is Sim from University College of Technology Sarawak, Malaysia. I am serving as an academic staff under the School of Computing and Creative Media.

     

    My university started to embark on a journey to promote STEM learning via digital maker events since 2015. We started off by inviting school children to participate in the maker events hosted at our campus during the first year. As we are expanding our effort to reach the rural areas, we conducted the maker events off the campus. We have use various kits in our events and we would certainly like to explore the use of micro:bit in digital making.

    I am arindam1993. I am a Doctoral Student doing my Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. In my undergrad, I worked as a trainer for "Robotics and Microcontroller". Currently,I am teaching students about microcontroller programming, sensor interfacing, integration of control theory and algorithm development for robotics. As I am an active member of  IEEE and Optical Society of America I have volunteered to be a mentor to teach new undergrad student electronics and robotics. The problem I usually face is that lack of resources to demonstrate algorithms and programming tricks- such as driving a multiplexed dot matrix display or PID algorithm on a robot that work on optical feedback( Line follower robots).

     

    Currently, I am building an electronic component reserve for my student to practice and when doing so I often have to spend money out of my pocket. So the kit's listed above will really help me to teach my students efficiently.

    Hey there, my name's Chris and I'm a STEM ambassador from Dorset, UK.

     

    A year ago I decided to expand my STEM outreach by opening a dedicated centre in a rural location - where nearby schools need the most help. I managed to secure a couple of units (2,400sqft), one of which derelict and in the past year have managed to open a number of exhibits including:

    - Dorset's only fixed planetarium

    - Robot Combat Arena

    - Mars zone with various interactive exhibits

    - 6m greenscreen

    - IT suite for coding lessons, adult edication

    - Educational shop

    - Engineering Zone

    - Dinosaur Zone

     

    We have a wide range of sessions covering ages 5-16.

     

    If we win the kit, we would use it in a variety of sessions throughout the year, including a new micro-bit club. We would launch this with a series of sessions themed "Mission to Mars". The sessions would be a mixture of fun lessons with space themed projects and free-play sessions where the children come up with innovative ways to tackle theoretical issues that we may face on the way to colonise Mars.

    Hello!

     

    My name is Peter Svedman and I am a lead teacher in math, science and information technology at a school in Stockholm, Sweden. I have been programming most of my life and for the past  twenty years I have been involved in one way or another with IT in schools. I am happy to see that that which once was expensive beyond dreams is getting down to affordable levels for us teachers.

     

    Currently I am planning for my 44 sixth grade (12 years old) students new curriculum. We have added some new obligatory curriculum parts about computing and binary numbers here in Sweden this year and I have been brainstorming fresh ideas to combine hardware, software and math on the kids level .

     

    The objective is to develop a comprehensive course that gives them knowledge about block-style coding, developing a technical solution to a given problem and some experience with binary numbers and structured problem solving.

    What I came up with is to use a microbit as a clock. The goal is to have a clock that runs, displays the time in some way using the built in display, preferrably as a binary clock. Some added flair like a wrist strap or other way for carrying the clock around is another outlet for their creativity.

     

    This ticks all the boxes for me, curriculumwise, and I believe it is quite an achievable challenge for my students. If  I win I believe we can deliver ten very interesting clocks by december.

    My name is Mário, my school is located in a region where technological knowledge is poorly developed or even dormant. In the last two I have developed a work of awakening the younger ones for the new digital technologies out of school. Conducting free workshops with the help of my students and the few resources. I was aware of the microbit I am still studying its potentialities but I would like to follow this your work.

    I run a Code Club in Napier, New Zealand for 8-10 year olds. We've been running for just over a year and have around 25 children who attend weekly. I am a professional software engineering volunteering there and the other main volunteer is a qualified teacher (makes a great combination!). We focus on using Scratch and Python (using repl.it) and have two Raspberry Pis in Pi-Top CEEDs. I bough a micro:bit to investigate if it would be suitable for use in the club and think it is a perfect fix. A full classroom set would allow us to make use of them!

     

    We have found many of the kids have difficulty transitioning from Scratch to other programming techniques, and this is where the micro:bit is a really good tool. It works well with the hardware that we have (mostly Chromebooks), is more affordable than the Raspberry Pi + HATs we have and has a familiar environment to Scratch (while also allowing moving to Python or Javascript with the same equipment). The Bluetooth networking features also allow us to introduce networking in a simpler way than is possible with other tools. And if that wasn't enough it also opens up a bridge to electronics.

     

    The micro:bit was a product that I didn't quite understand when it was announced, but since I've been running a Code Club I suddenly *get* how cleverly this product fits into learning. I've been lending my micro:bit to the teachers at the school to show them the potential of such a tool.

    Hello! My name's Daniel and I'm currently the Technology Coordinator of a large urban school in a high-poverty district. I've been teaching for close to twenty years, with over ten of those being in the Computer Lab - all at the same school! Over the course of the last couple of years, I've been trying to develop and acquire materials to help turn the lab into a real makerspace. We've started to incorporate everything from Makey Makeys, Scratch and coding websites, to video production equipment like green screens. We've got such a diverse population at my school that I'm constantly trying to find new ways to engage my potential new inventors to create the next big thing that can solve problems around the world. Also, I'm participating in a state working group called Developing a K-8 Computational Thinking Guide Aligned to State Standards where I look forward to developing cross-curriculum activities for those grade levels.

     

    I would plan to use the micro:bits directly with my students in the Computer Lab. Additionally, we are always trying to get students to collaborate in different grades, so I'm hoping to have fourth and fifth graders become adept enough to brainstorm ideas with our kindergarteners and first graders. Finally, it's my responsibility to help classroom teachers integrate technology into their instruction when appropriate and, I think micro:bits would be a simple tool that wouldn't scare them away and try something new.
