Exercise sheet sorter machine. Part1.

6 May 2015

Hi, I will introduce myself first, my name is Benjamin Bonnal and I am studying Micro-engineering at the EPFL in Lausanne Switzerland.

I am so glad to be able to develop great things with the material support of element14, so Thank you so much Christian DeFeo to organize all this, I really appreciate it.

As you have probably noticed by now, my English is not perfect, but I will try during my Blog Posts to make sure it is correct enough for everyone to understand.

As I like to do when I am searching for ideas I have drawn a few pictures to illustrate what I will do in the next few weeks (months).

image

After three years studying math physics mathematics mechanics electronics ... (you see the point) I tend to get pile and pile of exercise sheets that I don't want to throw away since they could be handy to have to study

the final exams.

But also those very same sheets are a real pain to get sorted and to keep track of them.

So I thought I could try to build a machine that could sort them out automagically for me... and I would only need to put a little blob of color one one corner to get the job done.

By the way, sorry for my hand-writing. I know that English and American people are not use to this style of writing but it is the only one I know.image

The device should be working just like a printer, but one that doesn't print... It should grab, analyse and class each paper sheet you throw at it image.

On this drawing, I tried to represent the basic mechanics of the device. It is a really basic design but I will improve it by the time I have to build it.image

Finally I took a minute to think about the software side of the project.

image

That is it for now, I will have to wait for the raspberry to be able to move forward with the software. Maybe I will take another look at the mechanics before.

Until then I hope you like the drawings.I should definitely invest into a Wacom tablet to get those drawings right.

Thanks for reading.

Now with the advent of Windows 10 IoT on the PI, this too could be a viable option

Interesting project. Very good description and plan. You should have a lot of fun putting this device together and getting it to work. DAB4

I was thinking about that, but I think that I will stick to linux to begin with, since I know how to handle the librarys for the GPIO as well as OpenCV. The big drawback of windows on the raspberry is…

Believe it or not, at my university they still grade some exams like that image Usually it is MCQs, I don't like those image

If you can find a small enough printer you might be able to hide the feed mechanism in the device without making it too unsightly.

Love the idea of using the camera to do the identification, reminds me of the OMR test papers we used to use.

Yes the feed mechanism on printers is pretty much what I need. But I don't want for my  machine to be build around an old printer (won't look very good maybe image ), I need to find one that could be easily extracted from the printer and adapted to my own use.

Thanks for reading, I really appreciate it !! Stick around for the next posts image.

    Looks like an interesting project.

You could maybe get an old printer from somewhere (ebay?) and use that to provide the feed mechanism.

Thanks a lot for taking a look at it.

I hope I will get it to work good enough to be able to "use" it, but I am not sure about the mechanical construction of the machine.

I haven't found a viable solution to drag only one sheet of paper at a time... I don't really undersand how they do it in commercial printers, maybe I will have to crack one open to take a better look at it.  (If you have any thoughts I would gladly hear them  image  )

I hope the software will not be an issue, the future will tell us.
