For this Design Challenge I wondered if we all knew exactly what is meant by the term "Robotics".
Thanks to the movie industry we seem to have these.

Along with various other intelligent machines, we've tended to fixate on a humanoid form, that has super power, super fast decision process's and is either good, or the baddie.

Long gone are the days when this form of robot was a Butler or Housemaid ...
This one broke the mould

Despite all the years of hype and predictions, it seems that our electronic friends haven't quite been perfected.
Darpa Competition Robot Complete Disasters
The 2015 DARPA challenge had a large field but many had to be 'nursed' through simple challenges.

So it seems the days of the 'Terminator' are still a way off.
Industrial Robots
One of the more common impressions might be these.

It's fair to say that many of our mass produced items would be more expensive if we didn't have industrial robots, but IMO this isn't what is meant by "Robotics"
If you said Robotic Arm, then yes you'd be right.
With added vision interfacing, they can draw.

The Industrial Robot has many things in common with the term 'robotics'.
- A set of instructions to perform simple repetitive tasks.
- Some primitive decision making associated with their program.
- Single purpose and specifically designed to suit the environment.
Micro Mice
We've become accustomed to seeing these small mobile things that try to find their way through a maze, and there are many competitions for doing just this.
The sizes range from Micro to something bigger, and the techniques used to get through vary.
This example is at the extreme, and relies on the mouse having a predetermined time to 'learn' the quickest way through.
Once it has learnt the quickest route, it is timed.
These devices have accelerometers to measure the sideways force, magnetometers to detect direction along with other tricks to optimise their performance.
In this case it all came together for an extremely quick time. .... so well done.
Robotics
So in the context of this challenge, if we assume that 'Robotics' refers to something that moves, then we have a definition to go on with.
The BOE Bot in this challenge is a two wheeled platform with a third stabiliser.
The intention is to show what makes it tick and the how to use this for various things.
