This year’s CES has been a place for making and celebrating partnerships between various tech companies. The announcement of Elektrobit (automotive/wireless tech) and IRNIX (traffic services) solidifies this trend. The companies are collaborating to produce a new generation of navigation software that will have some interesting innovations over current nav-technology.
Called ‘EB Street Director Technology,’ the system features the typical traffic updates (jams/accidents) but also includes speed-limit alerts and assistance (a form of automated cruise control?). What really puts SDT above current navigation systems are the implementation 3D map displays that show road curve, hills and intersection obstacle warnings. Other features include fuel-saving engine controls along with collision avoidance information which is displayed in real-time. The EB/IRNIX partnership even threw in the proverbial kitchen sink by including dynamic location referencing along with point of interest (POI) server information based on your current location. If the system can find me a pizza restaurant in the middle of a forest I would not be surprised, as EB/IRNIX has left nothing out of their SDT system.
