Apen for Windows 8 prototype (via CES2013LasVegas)
Many people were reluctant to get Windows 8 for their desktop OS. "A tablet OS for a desktop, no way," was the cry I heard and read about. I will admit, I didn't get the inexpensive upgrade for the same reason. Unfortunately, software isn’t hardware, and those few who thought they could navigate Microsoft’s newest OS using an un-capable screen we’re seemingly let down. But there is a solution, and it comes in the form of a stylish pen from EFun. Known as the Apen Touch8, the stylus works by using an infrared and ultrasonic receiver attachment this is secured to the screen (through the use of magnetic clips) that’s capable of tracking the Touch8 pen up to a distance of 17 inches on the diagonal (great for laptops, bad for desktops using bigger screens). The pen works by emitting an infrared beam that’s picked up by the receiver and the computer plots its exact location on the screen in real-time. Pressing the pen into the screen simulates the users touch (swiping, tapping etc.) and emits a separate ultrasonic signal, which allows the user to interact with the OS. The receiver is connected (and powered) with the computer through a USB port while the pen draws its power from a replaceable watch battery with an estimated 500 hours of use. While you may not be able to use it with the old CRT monitors (mod anyone?), it reportedly works extremely well with the newer LCD and LED flat-screens. The Apen Touch8 will be available for purchase in March (2013) at a cost of around $79.99 US.
I am sure that putting pressure on a screen that wasn't designed for it will be just fine...
