People have unique ways of expressing their holiday spirit. Vauxhall Motors and The King's Cross Filling Station left the task of creating a unique display for this holiday season to illustrator Gary Card. Card, which has had work appear in multiple publications, envisioned an electric tree with mechanical parts. The result was a spectacular piece of art, created entirely from Vauxhall Ampera parts.
The tree which is created with leaves made out of recycled parts, glows an attracting red at night. It then opens up its leaves to reveal the mechanical workings of engine parts on the inside. Strings of LEDs which create the glowing effect from the tree, flow downward and out the base of a tree into a cable. The cable then creates a glowing path that leads to a brand new Vauxhall Ampere(Chevy Volt in the U.S.) which powers the tree itself.
Card has created an eco-inspired art piece which can also promote electric vehicles. The display is part of Electric Christmas, a series of events over 6 months inspired by the Vauxhall Ampera. If anyone is around the London area you should definitely stop and check out the work. The display is set to be up until January 6th after the new year.
Gary Card speaking of his design, "When Vauxhall approached me to design a Christmas tree, my immediate response was create something mechanical. I really wanted to create a Christmas tree I'd never seen before. I loved the idea of applying the almost alien cybernetic design of the Ampera engine, to the warm, familiar silhouette of the Christmas tree. The overall design is inspired by the angles of the Ampera with a little nod to the robot iconography I loved as a child. I wanted to celebrate the fact that the Ampera is an electric car by having an electrical mechanism powering the Christmas tree..."
