Makers of Gorilla Glass, Corning Incorporated, and Samsung Mobile Display Co. are partnering to create a new glass substrate for future lines of high-end smartphones. They are combining Corning's LotusTm Glass substrate technology and Samsung Mobile Display's organic light emitting diode (OLED) display. The market for (OLED) devices is quickly growing and they took notice.

 

Corning’s developed a glass where they focused on the high-performance displays. According to Corning, Lotus Glass has a high "thermal and dimensional stability." Although the company is pushing Lotus as the next greatest material, their development comes out of the need to withstand extreme temperature shifts when manufacturing high-resolution OLED displays. The company also boasts faster response times using the Lotus glass substrate.

 

Samsung Mobile Display president and CEO Soo In Cho offered words of faith in the new union, "Samsung Mobile Display has led the global display industry by constantly seeking innovations and challenging current technologies' limits. We are confident that combining our business powers with Corning's technology leadership will deliver greater value to our clients."

 

Samsung is at the top of the pyramid when deciding which markets are hottest. In January 2012 Samsung and Corning announced the Galaxy mobile devices (ex: 720p phones) and the Super OLED TV technology will be the first devices to utilize Lotus Glass. Will low prices come along with the new venture?

    Hi Cabe,

     

    From the capabilities of this glass, you should find their devices will be much more durable.  The glass resists cracking and scratching, which will be a boost to the heavy users.
