Osram Opto Semiconductors to light-up the 2012 European Football Championships

Football (soccer) fans can feel safer while attending the European Football Chanpionships being held at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev (Ukraine) thanks to Osram Opto Semiconductors. The company recently won a bid (chosen by Elektronnyi Svet Ltd.) to outfit the stadium with their line of Golden Dragon Plus LED’s which will replace the out-dated conventional lighting being currently used.

The Golden Dragon line features efficient light dispersion with a beam-angle of 1700 and feature a silicon dome, ThinGaN LED structure and provide up to 203 lm at 1000mA using less power consumption over other LEDs. Elektronnyi Svet outfitted the handrails next to the steps leading up to the entrance to the stadium using 16,000 of Osram’s LEDs (almost one mile if laid end to end) making it safer for football fans to navigate.

While safety is certainly a welcomed aspect while attending any sporting venue, aesthetics help keep the fans interested which is why the stadiums 14 bar areas feature 12,000 (combined) of Osram’s Golden Dragon series 4-colored LED modules (3000 in all) to light up the bar counters. The individually controlled LED modules feature red, green, blue and white lights capable of generating just about any color imaginable while remaining ‘robust’ enough to handle any intoxicated fans. The new LED lights were chosen as a testament to energy-efficient technology commitment the Ukraine is currently undergoing, as well as providing the fans a safe and enjoyable environment for the UEFA final championship games (starting on July 1, 2012).

I wonder how long they will survive the "Hooligans" as they bash everything in sight after close game.

They may save a lot of power, but there could be a lot of plastic shards to dodge.

    Just a thought,
