Test of the prototype scanner (via NYPD)
Every police officer uses their street smarts and observational methods when approaching all different types of individuals. They are always cautious when approaching everyone, you never know who you are dealing with, or if they have a weapon.
Now new technology is here to help our protectors by analyzing the subjects from a distance. New York City Police Foundation, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said they were working to develop a gun-scan technology alongside the Defense Department.
The device would operate like an airport body scanner by reading the reflected energy people release and pinpointing an object that is blocking the flow, like a gun. Their goal is a portable terahertz scanning device. (I am sure all the 5" cell-phone in our pockets will never alarm the police.)
At the moment it is being tested for our police offers safety at the police shooting range, according to NYPD spokesperson Paul J. Browne. It has successfully works as a distance of about ten to sixteen feet. Mr. Browne alleged, “We’re looking for it to be effective up to [82 feet] 25 meters."
Perhaps the NYPD should join in on the latest X PRIZE, it seems they have the technology already developed.
