Road projected image for safety

Blaze concept and Emily Brooke, via University of Brighton

You can not hear the bike rider on your right, they lurk in your blind stop, you make a right and the thud of a human being ripples through your car and body.

From the University of Brighton, Emily Brooke has developed a way for bicyclists to be seen when riding along side vehicles. The device, dubbed "blaze," projects a green-laser image onto the ground some distance in front of the bicycle rider, and far enough ahead when a car driver riding along side can see it clearly. Green laser light can be seen clearly in bight daylight conditions, for those who do not know. The battery powered Blaze can be attach to the handle bars of bicycle, scooter, or motorcycle. The projected image could also be strobed. 80% of all cycle accidents are due to other vehicles maneuvering into a cyclist riding straight, Brooke stated. Not to mention when people open vehicle doors in front of bike riders.

After winning much attention and awards, Brooke is seeking to win a chance to develop her Blaze device further on an entrepreneurship program in the USA. I hope to see her device being standard on all bicycles soon, I have had a few close-calls with or as a bike rider. Few pay attention to motorcyclists.

This is really interesting, It would be good if it could be projected based on distance of near objects and stopping speed cyclist.

Since the laser is pointed down towards the ground, it should be much safer. Also, if the laser is a class I (1) or II (2) it could be safe for viewing. However, long periods of class 2 laser viewing is not a good idea.

Or, how about an intense green LED projector system?
