Samsung begins mass producing next generation embedded memory

Samsung produces NAND memory chips that are integrated into many of today's consumer electronics products. In fact, it has only been a mere eight months since they released their last embedded MultiMedia Card (eMMC) 4.5 chips. Now their latest NAND memory, the eMMC PRO 5.0 chips, promise to be the fastest embedded memory yet to be mass produced.

Many of today's new tech products demand increased performance and speed. While much of this has to do with the processor, the additional components and peripherals also have a lot to do with how well the device will perform. A large contributor to the speed of a system has to do with its memory. Indeed, almost all digital devices depend on memory to store information and programs, and how fast a processor can interface with that memory can greatly increase the speed of a product. Well, Samsung's new memory chip directly addresses that issue and provides engineers with exceptional speed and interfacing capabilities.

The chips are going to be available in the standard 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB memory capacities. In addition, they can achieve random read speeds of 7000 IOPS (inputs/outputs per second) and random write speeds of 7000 IOPS. Along with interfacing speeds of 400 megabytes per second (MB/s) the chips are more than 10 times faster than class 10 SD cards. With the added speed of interfacing, devices using these memory chips will be capable of multi-tasking, gaming, and streaming at much faster speeds.

“With timely mass production of our ultra-fast eMMC PRO line-up offering a more than 10X performance increase over external memory cards, Samsung will accelerate the spread of high-end mobile devices as the market for devices with larger screens and more multimedia functionality expands even further. We will continue to provide advanced mobile memory solutions that allow users to enjoy high definition, large-volume content seamlessly, as we also strengthen technological cooperation with mobile devices manufacturers,” commented KyongMoo Mang, Samsung's vice president of memory marketing.

The memory is already being mass produced and prepared for the mobile market. The chips size in at 11.5x13mm which will make them perfect for mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones. Furthermore, Samsung provides their own NAND controller and firmware for easier integration into embedded systems. We can guarantee that the next mobile devices Samsung, as well as other major  manufacturers, churn out will be boasting these new powerful chips.

    Hi Cabe,

I think just about everyone has been waiting for these chips.

Imagine, fast read and write, huge storage capability, what's not to like.

I wonder what the cost thought?

    Hmm.
