Flexible displays flexin' (via Samsung)
New information on Samsung’s flexible OLED displays, which were put on the back burner last year, has surfaced in a recent article of the Wall street Journal. According to the Journal, Samsung is currently in the last stage of development of their plastic displays which are slated for release sometime in 2013. The displays feature OLED’s (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) which are robust, super-thin and can be attached to almost anything such as flexible materials. The Korean company intends to fabricate the screens on a polyimide substrate which can withstand high temperatures (in the 350-400F range), and although they’re super flexible, the company’s focus is centered on the materials durability, reduced manufacturing costs and weight reduction over current displays (glass, AMOLED, LED, etc.). Speculation on the internet (knowyourmobile.in) suggests that the new displays will be integrated on Samsung’s Galaxy S4, which ‘may’ feature a 5-inch full HD bendable screen with a resolution of 1920 X 1080 that has a pixel density of 441ppi. Regardless of the rumors, you can expect the next batch of smartphones and tablets manufactured using Samsung’s flexible OLED displays to be thinner and lighter over the current generation of mobile devices.
