Virtual tour of Japan's disaster area

The March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami has been a tragedy. In an attempt to provide as much help to the scientific community through image capture, Google has before and after street views of the disaster struck area. See more at the "Build the Memory" page.

However we were affected, it is humbling to travel the streets of the area. Take a moment to walk through.

    Hi Cabe,

These images come very close to home for me.  My wife and I hosted two Japanese exchange students and one of them has most of her family up in the Sendai area.  In 1992 we visited them and got to drive through the Sendai area, where they had a wonderful collection of museums and other sites to see.  Sendai was also famous for grilled eels, which we sampled and greatly enjoyed.

While it is heart breaking to see the devestation, I know the Japanese determination and they will clean the area up and rebuild.  It will just take time.  Japan is at the intersection of four large faults, so they are probably the best prepared people in the world to deal with these events.  Anywhere else in the world you would have seen wide spread chaos after the earthquake, but the Japanese demonstrated how civilized people should conduct themselves during a nation wide tragedy.

I wish them well and look forward to the new Japan that will arise from the  rubble.
