The UK has an engineering heritage unrivalled around the world. The UK started the Industrial Revolution, pioneered railways and led the world in shipbuilding. Names such as Brunel, Stephenson and Watt are enshrined in our history. While shipbuilding and railways have passed into the UK’s engineering history, there is still much good engineering work being done here. But the UK tends to hide its engineering light under a bushel. People may point to Japan or Korea or the US as today’s engineering leaders, but many UK companies – and these tend to be smaller, rather than large – accomplish a lot in the electronics and engineering fields which should be celebrated.
