Introducing the 'Fundamentals of Diodes' eBook

The diode is the simplest of the various active electronic components. It is the most fundamental semiconductor device and its theory of operation is crucial to understand before moving on to studying transistors. By the end of this tutorial the reader should have an understanding on what diodes are and how they operate, as well as where they fit into the larger world of electronics. This tutorial will cover the topics listed below.

• Review of PN junctions in semiconductors
• Diode models and characteristics
• Different types of diodes
• Diode applications in electronic circuits

I recall germanium diodes, a piece of wire and a speaker to make a AM radio.

It's amazing how many types of diodes there are.. and yes, my first diode was an LED too.. my dad bought me a pack of them from Tandy/Radio Shack : )

Some rare but interesting diodes (not really sold much these days) are Gunn diodes and Tunnel diodes. Another really neat diode (still sold, but I guess in many cases replaced with 'RF Switch' integrated circuits) are PIN diodes.

Colpitts doesn't have an apostrophe : ) Or if it does, it is on the end, since the name was Colpitts, not Colpitt.
