Fairview, Texas has joined the LED City initiative, an international program that promotes energy-efficiency through LED lighting.
The recently-constructed Fairview Parkway is lit by 82 street lights from EvoLucia, a division of Sunovia Energy Technologies.
"Fairview is proud to join the LED City initiative with the opening of the first new street in Texas lit entirely by LED street lights," commented mayor Sim Israeloff.
"The quality of light is superior even to what we anticipated and is far better than what could have been provided by traditional lighting."
Designed to last an average of 12 years, the Sunovia fixtures offer 50 per cent energy savings in comparison to traditional metal halide lights, meaning even local taxpayers will benefit from the switchover.
The announcement follows news that 5,886 Osram Opto Semiconductors' Golden Dragon Plus LEDs have been used to illuminate the Yangzi River tunnel in China.
