There will be a 300 per cent increase in the number of LEDs used for LCD backlights by 2012, according to new research.
By 2012, 34 billion LEDs will be used in TFT LCD backlights in sizes ranging from 1" to 70", according to a DisplaySearch report.
This is a significant increase in the eight billion used in 2008 for backlights.
In total, there were 70.8 billion LEDs shipped in 2008 for different uses, including in active outdoor displays and for LCD backlights.
Commenting on the findings, vice-president of DisplaySearch Yoshio Tamura explained that new growth in the TFT LCD industry will result from the green improvements offered by LEDs.
He said: "TFT LCDs also provide new vigor to the LED industry as they open up broader applications requiring higher quality and more advanced technology.
"The interaction between the LCD and LED industries can be viewed as a key development in electronics in the coming decades."
Meanwhile, data from IMS Research indicates that LED use for laptop backlights is expected to increase, as the technology offers better efficiency, more power and better colour saturation.
