Solid-state lighting technology developer ilumisys has granted a license for its LED fluorescent tube replacement patents to Illinois-based Light Emitting Designs.
The licensing programme is designed to allow companies to provide new LED products to consumers, while still enabling ilumisys to continue its research and development efforts in preparation for the forthcoming large-scale adoption of the technology.
"The market for LED tube retrofits is significant and pegged for huge growth in 2010 and 2011," commented Tim Taylor, chief executive officer of Light Emitting Designs.
"We are pleased to have secured that future growth by being a licensed provider."
As well as providing an energy-efficient alternative to fluorescent tubes, LED replacements are mercury-free, cutting down on the amount of toxic materials deposited into the environment.
Los Angeles-based IHNcorp and its subsidiary Ecogreen Solutions recently used ilumisys' LED light tubes as part of a pilot programme for the city of San Juan Capistrano.
